Tennis at the Bainbridge Island Recreation Center

Whether you’re just starting out or a seasoned player, our tennis program offers something for everyone. The Bainbridge Island Recreation Center features four full‑size indoor USTA tennis courts, providing the perfect environment for year‑round play. We offer a wide range of programs for all skill levels—from relaxed open play to competitive leagues. Visit our pro shop for quality equipment and accessories, or use our ball machines for focused individual practice. Our professional tennis staff is dedicated to helping you improve your game, offering expert instruction tailored to your skill level and personal goals.

Programs & Instruction

We offer a variety of options for both youth and adults, including:

  • Classes
  • Live Ball and Skills and Drills clinics
  • Camps
  • Group and private lessons
  • Tournaments
  • BIRC Members receive discounted pricing. Non-members may attend classes, clinics and lessons for a fee. 

Courts 1-3

Courts 1-3 are located in our main building. Ball machine rental is offered on court 3. 


Court 4

Ball machine rental is available on court 4. It is also lined for pickleball and is primarily used for pickleball classes and leagues. 

Adult Tennis

We use the NTRP (National Tennis Rating Program) system to ensure players are placed in the clinic best suited to their skill level. Please review the descriptions below to help determine your rating. If you’re unsure, our instructors are happy to schedule an on‑court assessment.

 

2.0–2.5 | Beginner
New to tennis. Developing basic strokes, timing, movement, and court positioning. Can rally at a slow pace.
Common challenges: grip issues, inconsistent serve, limited net play.

3.0 | Advanced Beginner
Fairly consistent medium‑paced shots. Basic knowledge of volleys, lobs, and overheads.
Common challenges: handling pace/spin and net confidence.

3.5 | Intermediate
Reliable strokes with directional control and developing depth and variety. Growing tactical awareness.
Strength: Sustained baseline rallies.

4.0 | Advanced Intermediate
Consistent strokes with control and depth. Effective net play and strong doubles teamwork.
Strength: Reliable second serve and point construction.

4.5 | Advanced
Controls pace and spin, builds game plans, and plays aggressively at the net.
Strength: Wins points off serve and return, often with a signature weapon.
