The Ray Williamson Pool remains closed as Phase 2 of its planned rehabilitation project continues. The facility is not expected to reopen during 2026. This phase represents a significant investment in the pool's long-term safety, accessibility, and functionality.
Construction crews have mobilized on site, with security fencing installed and temporary power established throughout the project area. Demolition and renovation work began on May 11 and continues to progress steadily.
Major improvements include replacement of the concrete pool deck and perimeter tile, upgrades to the pool filtration and plumbing systems, removal and replacement of the existing pool liner coating, installation of new VGB-compliant drains, and replacement of pool handrails and other accessibility enhancements.
As part of the construction process, crews completed well drilling and coordinated groundwater discharge procedures with the City of Bainbridge Island. Dewatering will continue until the pool is refilled near the completion of the project. Draining the pool required approximately two and a half days, and the pool has now been fully emptied. Liner removal began on June 15 and is progressing alongside other demolition activities.
Pool demolition includes plumbing removal, concrete cutting, and structural demolition. Significant progress has already been made, with the glass walls removed and wood railings dismantled.
To help minimize impacts on ongoing aquatic programs, a temporary screen has been installed between the Ray Williamson Pool construction area and the Don Nakata Pool. While some construction-related noise and activity may be noticeable, efforts are being made to limit disruptions wherever possible.
During the closure, schedules at the Don Nakata Pool have been adjusted to accommodate community swimming programs and activities. Community members are encouraged to check the latest Don Nakata Pool schedule for current swim times and program availability.
