As we move into the final month of spring and look forward to another Pacific Northwest summer, I’m reminded why so many of us choose to call this community home. The longer days bring the return of softball games under blue skies, walks through shady wooded trails, and the reliable stretch of beautiful weather that makes this time of year so special on Bainbridge Island.
This month, I want to recognize two outstanding members of our parks and recreation team.
First, congratulations to Bryan Garoutte, our Assistant Recreation Director, as he prepares for retirement after almost four decades of service in parks and recreation. Bryan’s leadership, dedication to community programming, and passion for creating meaningful recreation opportunities have impacted generations of families. His work helped shape programs that continue to connect people, build confidence, and foster a stronger community.
I also want to congratulate Sierra Kross, our Stewardship Program Manager, on receiving the 2026 Emerging Professional Award from the Washington Recreation & Park Association. Sierra’s leadership in environmental stewardship, youth workforce development, and volunteer engagement reflect the incredible talent and commitment within our organization.
Summer registration is now underway, and many programs are filling quickly. We encourage everyone to explore available camps, classes, and activities while openings are still available. There are several exciting camps that are still available for registration. Our recreation staff have worked hard to create a summer lineup that offers opportunities for all ages to stay active, connected, and engaged.
At the Park District, we continue important long-term planning conversations with the Board of Commissioners. Following the Board retreat in late April, discussions are continuing around establishing committees to oversee Park District priorities. Guided by our Comprehensive Plan, we remain focused on improving and sustaining the parks and facilities we already have, while thoughtfully planning for future needs of our community.
Thank you for continuing to support our parks, programs, and staff. We look forward to seeing you out in our camps, activities, and at the parks.

Dan Hamlin,
Executive Director
